Empowering is the process of attaching purpose and energy to an object, herb, oil or stone (etc.) in order to use it in spell workings or the process of a ritual. Without empowering an object, the object won’t lend as much energy to the circle and won’t necessarily help with the intended purpose of the ritual since many objects can have many different meanings. In order to be able to empower, you must be able to visualize and you must know the purpose you’re seeking. It is also important that the purpose you’re attempting to empower an object with is not completely contradictory to the energy of the object.
-For attaching energy or purpose to a solid object, hold the object in your generator hand or both hands and visualize your energy flowing from you, pure, clean and unadulterated into the object, intense with the purpose you want. You can picture the words flying into the object through the energy, feel the purpose inside you while you pass the energy on or attach a color to the purpose and use that color energy. Similarly, if the object is not solid, you can hold your hands over it and use the process outlined above.
-If you can’t generate energy (see the section on energy working for information) or your visualization skills aren’t wonderful, you may instead want to use a little rhyme or incantation to attach a purpose to the object. For example, if you were to empower a buttercup to help you in a health spell, you might say something like the following:
“Heal my body, make me well, heed the words within my spell” (Patricia Telesco- A Floral Grimoire)
Any object used within a spell or ritual needs to be empowered and cleansed. This includes your athame (if brand new), candles (usually with oils or by their color), salt, water, and any other objects used. The more attention you pay to the details of your spell or ritual, the more successful it will be.
